The Bible refers to this assembly meeting as either “the Lord’s Supper” 1 Corinthians 11:20 or “the Breaking of Bread” Acts 2:42.
The Lord’s Supper was…
- Instituted in the Gospels (Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:19-20)
- Implemented in the Acts. (Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7)
- Illuminated in the Epistles (1 Corinthians 10:16-17, 1 Corinthians 11:17-34)
The Schedule
The Gospels record the fact of the Supper, the Acts records the frequency of the Supper. Acts 20:7 says, “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread.” This reference records the early apostolic practice of observing the Lord’s Supper on a weekly basis. On the first day of every week we meet for this express purpose, to partake of the emblems, and to worship and remember the Lord Jesus.
The Structure
This meeting is open to brethren who audibly participate either in the selection of a hymn, offering of worship in prayer or at times a devotional message shared in appreciation of Christ. Sisters also inaudibly participate in prayer, join in the singing of hymns, and partake of the emblems. There is no pre-arranged format, or minister who presides over the service. The Holy Spirit prompts participation and guides the worship of the assembly meeting together. You will find different assembly members without human direction rising to express worship in prayer and hymn. That which is in rememberance and worship of His person and redemptive work is considered in this meeting that culminates in the distribution of the emblems.
The Symbols
The bread and cup are symbols of the body and blood of Christ. The Lord Jesus said of the bread, “Take eat, this is my body” and of the cup, “This is my blood” Mark 14:22-23. As the emblems are given thanks for and then distributed there is a renewed appreciation shared for the sufferings and death of Christ on the cross.
